Hemp SeedsThe Hemp Crop

Hemp is one of the most useful and sustainable crops out there.

So what is so GOOD about Hemp?

  • It is very beneficial to the environment as it is a very efficient carbon sequester.
  • We don't use any Pesticides or Herbicides.
  • It provides an excellent habitat for wildlife.
  • It is excellent for soil structure and health.

Hemp has many uses, and nothing is wasted!

Once harvested we use the seeds for our GOOD Oil, and the rest of the crop is used for the following:

  • The straw is used to make Hemcrete, one of the most eco-friendly building materials available. It works as a great insulator as well as 'locking' CO2. To read about sustainable building projects using Hemcrete click here
  • The fibre is supplied to BMW for the doors of 3 & 5 Series cars. The fibre reduces the weight per car by approximately 1kg,
    thus enabling fuel efficiency.
  • The dust cleaned from the seed is supplied to worm farms.
  • Leaf matter supplies essential nutrients back to the soil as a natural fertiliser.
Every 800 bottles of GOOD OIL produces enough hemp straw to build an entire Eco-house. This amount of straw locks a net gain of 7.5t of CO2. More than annual CO2 produced by the average UK Household.

Put another way, 1 bottle of GOOD OIL produces enough straw to lock the equivalent
CO2 produced by the average 40 mile car journey.

How we Process the Hemp Seeds

We think that Hemp Seed is amazing, so we don't mess around with it. We make our GOOD Hemp Seed Oil by simply:

  •  Growing Hemp (using no herbicides or pesticides)
  •  Carefully harvesting the seeds
  •  Drying the seeds immediately to lock in the flavour
  •  Selecting the best seeds and then cleaning them
  •  Cold Pressing the seeds
  •  Using Gravity to filter the oil (we don't rush this bit)
  •  Bottlling it!

Organic or not Organic?

Well - it is not as straightforward as you might think. GOOD Hemp Seed Oil is not certified by the Soil Association as Organic. This is because "Natural" Hemp production, which we do, is actually better for the environment. Seriously! Let us explain...
Hemp is an exceptionally sustainable and beneficial crop to the environment. No pesticides or herbicides are required and it is a great carbon sequester. It does not require any weed control during the growing period (either mechanical or chemical) and every aspect of the plant is used. Nothing is wasted – and this is the big difference. To be organic we would have to enter into a crop rotation (even though Hemp is great for the soil) that allows high weed population. This would contaminate the fibre and mean that we couldn’t use it for BMW Car door panels or Building Materials – so over 70% of the crop would be wasted, and we’d be using the same amount of fuel to grow and harvest it!
